CONNECT USING 7.2M 3G HSDPA USB WIRELESS MODEM FROM WINDOWS 7 (PLEASE WAIT A MOMENT, READING SMS… PROBLEM)
by dav
Today I got this 7.2M 3G HSDPA USB Wireless Modem from eBay (search for: 7.2M 3G HSDPA WCDMA SIM USB2.0 Wireless Modem Unlocked WLAN Network Card Adapter)
The problem was – as I installed the software (which was inside its memory) and it was just stuck at at this message “Please wait a moment, reading SMS…” and it took forever and was going nowhere!
Later, I found out that the onlyway how to get around it is by using keyboard shortcut ALT+F4 (close current window). And then just click connect in the application.
If you don’t care you are done– you can shut it down with ALT+F4 each time the app starts and live happily ever after.
Though here is how to solve it the “Hacker Way” – without installing the crappy software:
- Insert the USB modem
- install the driver fromhere (x86 Windows 7, Vista, Xp) or here (x64 Windows 7, Vista and possibly XP) – just unpack and double click DPInst.exe
- Modem should be now installed, to verify go to Control Panel and search for “Modem” and in the “Modems” section should be “USB Modem”. Mine was attached to COM5 but it doesn’t really matter.
- We need to create new dial-up connection – go to Control Panel and search for “set up a dial-up connection” and click on it. based on your operator insert as dialed number *99# (this applies to Vodafone and O2 – probably worldwide). Username and password keep empty.
- Make sure that IPv6 is turned off as it (at this moment) causes trouble. It is likely that later (in a year or so) you will not need to uncheck this.
- Connect!
- And as always… Profit!
Btw. I tested it and was able to pull through about 4Mbps as downlaod and 384kbps as upload which is quite ok… With ping in range of 60 – 100 ms.
