Double derby day in the north west has been thrown into doubt with the Met Office warning there will be heavy snow in Manchester and Liverpool.

Many parts of the country will be blanketed in snow over the weekend - and Old Trafford and Anfield are set to bear the brunt of the adverse weather conditions on Sunday.

As much as eight inches of snow could fall in the region - plunging one of the most mouthwatering days on the Premier League calendar under threat.

The weather warning for the region has been raised from 'yellow' to 'amber', which means people should 'be prepared to change their plans and protect themselves, their families and community'.

Forecasts show heavy snow falling from 5am right throughout the day, coupled with sub-zero temperatures.

The Manchester derby is arguably under greater threat, given that the kick-off is 4.30pm, giving the snow plenty of time to settle.

While under-soil heating will likely ensure the playing surface is safe for action, it is the areas around the ground that will be of more concern to the clubs and authorities.

In 2010, United's trip to Chelsea and Arsenal's clash with Bolton were both postponed over health and safety concerns.
